1 day Screenprinting Workshop - June 2017

‘My friend and I spent the day with Max on the Screen printing course at the Smallprint Press. We both loved our day and were over the moon with what we actually came away with. Max helped us learn the process of Screen printing without overloading us with details that we didn’t need at this stage. She helped us go with the ideas that we had, but had lots of ideas incase we needed them. We would love to do the course again and fulfill our new bug for printing!’

1 day Screenprinting Workshop - June 2017

‘I really enjoyed our day screen printing and drove home thinking of all the things I could do 'next time.' It's definitely got me hooked, just need to fit it in with the ceramics. I can't really think of any useful feedback, other than I thought it was great!’

2 Day Collagraph Workshop - August 2017

‘Maxine, thank you for a very enjoyable two days. I wanted to come away from the course feeling clearer about how to produce collagraphs. Not only do I feel more confident, but you also demonstrated the need to take a problem solving approach to the whole process. For me this means that the print can take on a life of its own, while still reflecting the original idea. So, exciting times ahead. Also, thank you very much for the delicious flapjacks and biscuits.’

5 week half-day basic printmaking course - January 2017

I signed up for the 5 week basic printmaking course with Max with a little trepidation ! I had never done any forms of printing before and would consider my self not artistic at all !

However, there really was no need for any concern. Max was amazing at explaining what we were doing with out making anything too complicated and did not make me feel like it was something that I was unable to do.

I looked forward to my Tuesday afternoons when I could escape and join Max in her lovely studio and allow myself the time to actually discover that maybe I had the ability to be a bit artistic after all.

I produced several pieces of work that I was more than happy with and even felt they deserve a space on my wall.

I have signed up for a screen printing course that I am looking forward to already.

I would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone.

Thank you Max for reminding me that there is nothing wrong with spending time doing something you enjoy…..just because you want to ! :0)’

2 Day Collagraph Workshop - August 2016

‘I spent a couple of days working intensely with Maxine in her studio. I had a specific idea of what I wanted to learn and Maxine adapted very quickly and after two days, I came away with the techniques I needed.

I now need to practice the skills I learnt and will, in due course, come back and work again with Maxine who has a lovely balance of printmaking and welcoming personal skills.  Thanks, Maxine.’

Monoprint Workshop  - July 2016

‘I went to one of Maxine's first workshops in her new studio earlier this year. Although I have a printmaking MA and a fine art BA, I felt I had a poor sense of colour and how successfully to use it in my work. Maxine is an expert artist, in knowing where to deploy colour which is a distinct advantage. So her workshop seemed the perfect solution.

I took along a sketchbook of drawings made on walks through the various landscapes, and Maxine helped me to free up my ideas and experiment with them technically. She took me through the various materials required.

While you could use anything with a flat surface, we decided on flat plexiglass plates - a painterly technique which proved quite liberating. We used both oil and water-based inks, brushes, rollers, rags, hands and cotton buds, and anything pointed to work as a mark making tool.

Maxine encouraged me to use my drawing skills and work in a painterly fashion. I am still nervous of my ability as a painter, but her positive feedback gave me the confidence to at least try. We used lots of methods to create marks, including spraying, dabbing and painting solvent onto the inked plates, which can create beautiful reticulated effects.

Another technique I knew little about was direct tracing, said to have been invented by Gaugin. Maxine showed me how to ink a plate evenly, lay paper over it, then make marks on top, transferring a reverse image onto the paper.

After the session, Maxine showed me some of her own work. In this she had combined other techniques for use by a student who had become relatively confident in monoprinting. Such people would also, I've no doubt, benefit from a workshop with her.

Maxine's workshop is both friendly and very well-organised, and she is a highly competent, inventive and supportive painterly and teacher’.

Monoprint Workshop - February 2016

‘I really enjoyed the monoprint course led by Maxine Foster.

It was a great introduction to the techniques of monoprinting.

Maxine gave us brilliant instruction, then we had a go. I found it delightfully involving, with endless possibilities opening up in my imagination! There was lots to learn and get our creative teeth into.

I really can't recommend the course and Maxine enough. I want to do it again!’

‘The short course in screen printing was excellent. Max tailored the course to my needs and gave me the confidence to experiment with the variety of techniques she showed me.'

‘Thanks for the course on Saturday, we both had a really good time and learned a lot. The images we created we are very happy with - we’re now trying to work-out when we can next get into the studio!’.

Tom and Ingrid Chesher Bath.

‘I really enjoyed my 3 hours with Max, she tailored the course to my needs, was clear in her instruction and great fun as a tutor. The course itself was very good value and I intend to continue my studies with Max.’

Jess from Bath.

I thoroughly enjoyed my one day taster course in screen printing, it was just what I needed to give me an insight into the methods and equipment involved. With Maxine’s guidance I was able to produce several great T-shirts with only a few hours training... I will definitely be booking another follow-up lesson in the near future.’
